What is the difference between LCD and OLED displays?

From:www.eurotech-lcd.com    Date:2024-06-04

The difference between LCD and OLED displays can be clearly divided into the following main aspects:

Construction principle:

LCD (liquid crystal display): uses liquid crystal molecules to change the polarization state of light under the action of electric field to control whether light is transmitted or not. LCD screens require a backlight to provide light source, and the backlight adjusts the liquid crystal molecules to allow light to pass through the pixels, thereby displaying images.

OLED (organic light-emitting diode): composed of organic light-emitting diodes, each pixel can emit light independently. It uses organic materials and current to generate light, and does not require a backlight. By adjusting the size of the current, various brightness and color display effects can be achieved.

Display effect:

Contrast: Since each pixel of the OLED screen can emit light independently, it can achieve true pure black, so the contrast is higher, and the color is deeper and richer. When the LCD screen displays black, since the backlight cannot be completely turned off, a certain amount of backlight leakage will occur, resulting in a worse black performance than the OLED screen.

Viewing angle: The OLED screen has a wider viewing angle range, up to about 170 degrees, and can obtain better display effects in both horizontal and vertical directions. Due to the limitation of liquid crystal molecules, the viewing angle range of the LCD screen is relatively narrow, and brightness and color changes may occur at different angles.

Color performance: Since each pixel of the OLED screen can emit light independently, the brightness and color of each pixel can be precisely controlled, providing brighter and more realistic color performance. The color performance of the LCD screen is relatively limited. Affected by the liquid crystal molecules and the backlight source, it is difficult to achieve the color reproduction effect of the OLED screen.

Power consumption and life:

Power consumption: When the OLED screen displays black, it can completely turn off the pixels, so it can greatly reduce power consumption and save electricity. The LCD screen consumes a certain amount of energy no matter what is displayed because the backlight source needs to be on all the time.

Life: The life of the OLED screen is relatively short, especially when displaying high brightness, it is prone to problems such as pixel aging and color drift. The LCD screen has a longer life under normal use conditions.

Price:

Generally speaking, OLED displays of the same size are much more expensive than LCD displays. This is mainly because the production cost and technical threshold of OLED are high.

Technology maturity:

As a traditional display, LCD is much better than OLED in terms of technological maturity. For example, in terms of display response speed, there is still a certain gap between the performance of OLED displays and LCD displays.

In summary, there are significant differences between LCD and OLED displays in terms of construction principle, display effect, power consumption, lifespan, price, and technical maturity. When choosing, you can weigh and choose according to your personal needs and usage scenarios.
