What are the differences between OLED screens and LCD screens?

From:www.eurotech-lcd.com    Date:2023-07-11

Although the oled screen and the lcd screen are both the same screen, the OLED screen and the lcd screen are two completely different screens. Now the mainstream screen types, whether for industrial use or mobile computer screens, mainly include lcd screen and oled screen. .

First, the working principle of the LCD screen is different from that of the OLED screen.

The LCD screen needs a backlight layer, a vertical polarizer, a positive circuit, a liquid crystal layer, a negative circuit, a horizontal polarizer, and a color filter. The bottom backlight layer glows.

The oled screen only has positive and negative circuits and light-emitting diodes, and it can emit light without a backlight.

Because of its light-emitting mechanism, the degree of reduction of LCD is not high, far inferior to that of OLED. One is that the backlight emits light through the film, and the other is self-illumination, and LCDs generally have light leakage, especially in dark environments, OLEDs have an advantage in terms of screen display quality.

Second, the power consumption of the LCD screen is different from that of the OLED screen.

The lcd screen has a backlight layer, so the whole screen needs to be illuminated, and the oled screen has no backlight layer, and the oled screen can emit light for each pixel individually, which will have a good feature: power saving, which is what we call Low power consumption screen reminder.

Third, the contrast of the LCD screen is different from that of the OLED screen.

We all know that the higher the contrast, the more vivid the color. The oled screen benefits from the self-illumination of light-emitting diodes, so the displayed contrast will be extremely high. The polarizer cannot be completely closed, resulting in some white light leaking out. The black impurity of the display causes light leakage.

The PWM (pulse width, light leakage modulation) frequency range of the oled screen is 50 to 500Hz, while the frequency of the lcd is higher than 1000Hz, and the sensitivity of the human eye to flicker is only 250Hz, so the oled screen is easier than the lcd cause eyestrain.

LCD uses backlight to emit light, and the light source is stable, so there is no need to worry about screen flickering, while the color change of oled screen means that the light flickers frequently, even the top Samsung flagship screen still cannot avoid the problem of screen flickering, long-term viewing of LED lights will cause user harm Visual fatigue.

Fourth, the service life of the lcd screen is different from that of the oled screen.

OLED displays by changing the voltage of light-emitting diodes. One of the disadvantages of light-emitting diodes is that their lifespan is short, so when it displays a certain color for a long time, it will have a different lifespan from other color diodes, which will cause color differences. We often say burn screen.

Because the LCD screen emits light from the backlight layer, even if there is aging phenomenon, the naked eye will not see the obvious difference, so mobile phones with OLED screens are easy to burn the screen, so the LCD screen has an advantage in terms of service life.

Fifth, the thickness of the LCD screen is different from that of the OLED screen.

The lcd screen is composed of 7 kinds of materials such as backlight layer, vertical polarizer, positive circuit, liquid crystal layer, negative circuit, horizontal polarizer and color filter. OLED screen structure is simpler, with thinner and better curvature , so compared to lcd screens, oled screens have an advantage.

How does the lcd screen compare to the oled screen? Let us briefly summarize the differences between the lcd screen and the oled screen.

Advantages of LCD screen: no burn-in problem, cheap cost, stable color

Disadvantages of LCD screen: impure color, high power consumption, light leakage, thicker

OLED screen advantages: low power consumption, high contrast, thin and light, rich colors

Disadvantages of oled screen: high cost, flash screen burn-in problem, low lifespan

The advantages and disadvantages of oled screens are very obvious, both lcd and oled have their advantages and disadvantages, the key is to see who uses them? It will be better to use different screens reasonably for different products.
